Spring Kick-Off Quick Hits

Vincent Cervino

Here is a look at of some of the young prospects that stood out the most at last weekend's 13u/14u PG Spring Kick-Off.

Tucker Christensen, RHP/IF (2020, Norwalk, Iowa) - Christensen settled in early at the 80-82 mark with his fastball. He throws with some effort but the arm works through the back with a fuller arm circle. The fastball has some heaviness and he showed a sound approach on the mound working the fastball to both sides and mixing in a curveball.

Chase BeckerRHP (2021, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) - A teammate of Christensen, Becker really impressed on the mound and showed advanced command of his slider. The pitchability is another aspect of his game that stood out and he worked his fastball, that sat 78-80, very well. He threw from a lower three-quarter slot and would use the slider as a two-strike pitch and it sat in the mid-60s with true 9/3 shape.

Justin ColonSS (2021, Carolina, Puerto Rico) - The Florida International commit has very advanced athleticism with an extremely high ceiling. He already has some smoothness in the field with a lanky current build although he projects well physically. The swing shows loose and fluid hands with a clean path and high level bat speed for the class.

Daniel CoronaSS/RHP, (2021, Brooklyn, N.Y.) - Colon's double play partner up the middle, Corona has an already impressive collection of tools. The athleticism is still developing as he adjusts to his 6-foot+ frame, but he shows a fluid swing path with excellent physical projection. Corona was also 82-84 mph on the mound with a very loose arm and an advanced feel to spin at an early age.

Izaac PachecoSS/RHP (2021, Friendswood, Texas) - The Texas A&M commit has a build and frame in a similar vein as Colon and Corona. He is high waisted with immense projection remaining and has a very clean path to the ball. The swing is short and line-drive oriented and he showed pretty consistent bat-to-ball skills throughout the event. He was also impressive on the mound sitting 78-80 with a mostly clean arm.

Bryant ColonOF (2021, Greenacres, Fla.) - Pacheco's teammate showed immense offensive potential during the weekend tournament. There is projection throughout the frame and he takes big swings at the plate with intent to drive the ball. He showed good pop at the plate with advanced bat speed and flashed leverage. Colon showed quickness in the outfield with good reads on fly balls.

Mekhian JacksonOF (2021, Dothan, Ala.) - Jackson showed solid offensive tools throughout the event with a power-oriented approach at the plate. He showed a bit of an inconsistent path at times but the intent was there with good bat speed relative to his class.

Michael BraswellSS/RHP (2021, Mableton, Ga.) - Braswell was on a talented Team Halo squad and showed intriguing ability. There is a ton of projection on the frame with broad shoulders and long limbs and already has clean actions at shortstop. The offensive consistency is still developing but the tools are there. He was also 80-82 mph on the mound with a curveball that flashed occasional tight spin.

Sam Contacos, C (2021, Irwin, Pa.) - Contacos showed some of the most advanced skills behind the plate of anyone in the entire event. His catch-and-throw skills are vey impressive for his age and the physical frame already shows athleticism and quick twitch. The arm strength is also strong relative to his class and he has very sound defensive actions overall.

Jonathan CymrotMIF/RHP (2021, San Jose, Calif.) - Cymrot showed impressive abilities both at the plate and on the mound. He has good present athleticism, timed 4.58 home to first righthanded, with relatively quick hands and a clean path. His instincts are off the charts and he took advantage of that on the base paths specifically. On the mound he was 81-83 with a foundation for a good curveball; the arm action has some issues but it works with good relative arm speed.

Ethan Wood RHP/1B (2021, Lebanon, Ky.) - Wood had the top velocity of the event working 85-87 mph in the first inning. The arm is extremely loose with good relative arm speed and gets on top of the ball consistently. The secondaries are a bit raw right now but the arm talent and physical projection, a 6-foot-5 frame, are extremely strong indicators for his future success.

Logan Forsythe RHP (2022, Woolmarket, Miss.) - Forsythe was previously seen by this scout in Ft. Myers during the 13u MLK Day Championship where he topped out at 85 mph. He was sitting at 86 mph touching 87 mph on occasion this past weekend with the arm action being extremely clean and throwing with relatively little effort. He remains raw, as most of the players on this list are, but has high-level pitching tools.
