Week 1 Spring League Recap

After below freezing temperatures and snow wiped out opening weekend, week two got under way on Friday night with games at TBK Bank Sports Complex and Mt. Mercy University.   


Iowa Sticks Romanchuk vs. Iowa Select Sole/Frazier

With nearly 30 college commitments between the two teams, this matchup was sure to be a much followed double header. Top performances from the doubleheader are highlighted below:




Carter Baumler (2020, Grimes, Iowa) was impressive as always running his fastball up to 90 miles per hour in his first outing of the spring. The TCU commit showed a sharp 11/5 curveball to go along with the fastball creating a large amount of swing and misses. Baumler was also able to collect three hits on the weekend including a double driven deep into the left center field gap while posting a .429 batting average on the weekend.

Andrue Henry (2020, Dubuque, Iowa) The Kirkwood Community College commit flashed his hit tool in a big way Friday night at Mt. Mercy collecting 2 hits including an impressive opposite field double driven deep into the right field corner.

Tyler Tscherter (2020 Reinbeck, Iowa) Was impressive on the mound Friday night for Iowa Select 2019 Sole/Frazier showing a funky arm action from a lower three-quarter slot topping out at 85 miles per hour with heavy run on the fastball. Also showed the ability to play middle infield with good range to both sides in the infield. Keep an eye on this uncommitted 2020 two-way prospect.

Jalen Martinez (2020 Waukee, Iowa) Enjoyed the start of the season on Friday night collecting three hits to go along with a strong performance on the mound throwing three solid no hit innings of baseball. Jalen also tagged on an additional three hits on Saturday. Jalen is another uncommited intriguing two-way prospect to watch.

Josh Fitzgerald (2019 Mason City, Iowa) Started the spring well tagging multiple balls with authority while collecting two hits. Fitzgerald flashed his known plus athleticism in the outfield with multiple impressive catches. With the two hits, Fitzgerald also tacked on a stolen base. Fitzgerald recently made his college commitment to Kirkwood Community College.

Calvin Harris (2020, Epworth, Iowa) was his usual self to start the spring with hard contact multiple times while collecting one hit on the day with a hard single through the right side. The Ole Miss commit was impressive behind the plate as well showing off his strong arm keeping runners at bay on the bases.

Top 2019 Performances



Max Hansen (2019, Grand Mound, Iowa) Showed the ability to locate his fastball up to 80 miles per hour on both sides of the plate keeping hitters off balance consistently and inducing many swing and misses. Hansen finished the weekend with 3 IP and 5 K’s. Wartburg commit.

Top 2020 Performances

Logan Schmitt (2020 Independence, Iowa) Worked two perfect innings on Friday night sitting in the low 80s topping out at 85 miles per hour to go along with a slider at 70 miles per hour while collecting 6 strike outs. Logan came back on Saturday morning collecting two hits and three RBIs at the plate.

Caleb Banowetz (2020, Grand Mound, Iowa) was perfect through 4 innings creating swing and misses with a heavy fastball up to 81 MPH before giving up an infield single to break up his perfect game in the 5th. The uncommitted lefty struck out 8 and addded an RBI double on Sunday.

Nile Foss (2020, Carlisle, Iowa) recorded 3 perfect innings of work for PG Select Brune/Rath while striking out 6. The uncommitted lefty located well from his three quarters arm slot and mixed in a devastating curveball go with his fastball that sat 80-82

Trey Morris (2020, Ankeny, Iowa) worked 3 perfect innings for Iowa Sticks Romanchuk. He sat at 80-82 and topping at 84 MPH while working in lower 70's curveballs. The uncommitted righty struck out 4 in 3 perfect frames.


Top 2021 Performances



Jackson Wentworth (2021, Urbandale, Iowa) was dominant in his first outing of the spring running his fastball up to 88 miles per hour to go along with a wipe out slider. The Kansas State commit collected 9 strike outs through his three quick innings of work.

Logan Runde (2021, Peosta, Iowa) pitched two innings in relief in EMB 2's victory over QC Sticks Mitchell. The primary Catcher ran his fastball up to 86 and has gained 5 mph since we have seen him last. Runde struck out 4 on the day without surrendering a hit. He also drove in a 2 RBI double on the weekend.


Top 2022 Performances



Iowa Select 2022 Gutwiler started the spring off scorching hot with the bats collecting three wins on the weekend behind home runs from John Klosterman (2022, Iowa City, Iowa) and Sam Wilt (2022, Anamosa, Iowa). Marcus Beatty (2022, Independence Iowa) and Kinnick Pusteoska (2022 Solon, Iowa) both were able to collect multiple extra base hits on the weekend as well.

George Sherlock (2022, Asbury, Iowa) showed good power potential and hit tools this weekend, collecting 3 hits including a towering home run to right center. Sherlock is a very intriguing catcher prospect with his hit tool making him standout among catchers in his age group.


Top 2023 Performances

Max Burt (2023, Mason City, Iowa) continues to impress in PG Iowa events this year. Max picked up a pair of hits for Iowa Sticks Sorge in Saturday's doubleheader while also pitching 2 1/3 hitless innings. Max struck out two.
