Week 3 Spring League Recap

Photo: Ian Moller (Perfect Game)
About a dozen scouts lined up to watch game #1 at Independence High School between Hitters Academy from Racine, Wisconsin vs Iowa Select Sole/Frazier from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Top players from both states were scattered amongst both lineups with some getting looks for MLB's June Amateur Draft. The game ended in a 7-7 tie, however, this game and others were filled with many great performances this weekend. Some top performers are listed below with our new features on Top Pitchers and Top Hitters of each grad year for each weekend.

Top 2019 Performers

Pitcher of the Week: Nick Gottilla (2019, Davenport Assumption HS) made his first appearance of the Spring and did not disappoint. The lanky left hander ran his fastball up to 87 with some deceptive tailing action. His sharp breaking ball at 72 provides a great complementary pitch. Gottilla provides plenty of deception in his delivery and was very impressive in striking out eight in three innings pitched while showing good control, walking two. Gottilla is a fascinating left handed prospect with plenty of room to grow. University of Central Florida commit.

Also Considered:

Blake Grevengoed (2019, West Des Moines Valley HS) did not need any help getting outs this weekend for Iowa Sticks Pearson. Grevengoed struck out 12 batters over four innings and surrendered just two hits. The righty worked his fastball up to 85 mph with a curveball sitting 67-69. Grevengoed is the top 2B prospect in his class in the state of Iowa and is committed to DMACC.

Carter Petsche (2019, Dyersville Beckman HS) pitched two innings for Iowa Select Nordgren/Stroschein, picking up eight strikeouts, allowing no hits and walking just a single batter. Petsche flashed a fastball that ran up 80 with a slider that worked 69-72. Petsche is a Luther College commit.

Sam Goodman (2019 Western Dubuque HS) The Iowa commit was impressive in his first outing of the spring working three quick innings, scattering two hits and collecting three strike outs while topping out at 87 miles per hour with his fastball.

Max Hansen (2019, Calamus-Wheatland HS) cruised in his three innings of work for Iowa Select Nordgren/Stroschein, striking out six and allowing only a single hit. Hansen showcased plus control allowing no walks. Max's fastball worked in the low 80's with a tight spinning slider in the low 70's. Hansen is a Wartburg College commit.

Batter of the Week: Kyle Lehmann (2019, Western Dubuque HS) collected five hits this weekend including two doubles and five RBI. Lehmann also impressed on the mound with a fastball up to 83 and a curveball at 68 mph. Lehmann struck out six in three innings pitched. Lehmann is uncommitted.

Also Considered:

Jack Luster (2019, Ballard Community HS) continues to swing a very hot bat this spring, collecting four hits on the weekend, including 2 doubles. Jack has been on a tear this Spring, hitting .500 over 24 at bats with six extra base hits. Luster showed plus receiving skills behind the plate with good arm strength. DMACC commit.

Will Kranz (2019, Davenport Central HS) had a breakout weekend for DRBA Runnin Reds 2019/20, collecting four hits including a double and walking twice over two games. Kranz is now hitting .417 on the season and has scored seven runs. Kranz is a primary shortstop and is uncommitted.

Austin Simpson (2019, Fairfield HS) collected three hits, two going for extra bases and drove in two runs for Iowa Select Sole/Frazier this weekend. Simpson has a large strong build and has plenty of power potential as he grows into his body and improves his hitting tools. Good defensive actions around first base showing good range for his size. Simpson is committed to Southeastern Community College.

Top 2020 Performers

Pitcher of the Week: Johnathan Blake (2020, Dubuque Senior HS) was electric for the second weekend in a row. The righty ran his fastball up to 84 and struck out nine over five innings pitched. Again, his control was also impressive, only walking one. Blake also collected a pair of singles at the plate this weekend for DRBA Senior Rams Feeder. Blake is uncommitted.

Also Considered:

Reece Lawler (2020, Warren Township HS, IL) shined in his four innings pitched for Hitters 1. Lawler struck out eight and only allowed a single hit while walking two. Lawler's fastball was the fastest we saw all day, topping at 89 with a mid 70's curveball to complement it.  Lawler is an University of Iowa commit.

Tyler Tscherter (2020,  Gladbrook-Reinbeck HS) pitched three scoreless innings for Iowa Select Sole/Frazier this weekend, striking out four while allowing just a single hit. He showed plus control on all pitches, walking just one and running his fastball up to 86 with off speed sitting between 75 and 78. Tyler is uncommitted.

Casey Young (2020, Winterset Senior HS) showcased both his fastball and curveball this weekend, striking out four over three innings of work. Young allowed just a single hit and walked two. The lefty sat low 80's on his fastball with his curveball providing a good complementary pitch, sitting in the upper 60's with good spin and depth. Young is a Northwestern commit.

Batter of the Week: Calvin Harris (2020, Western Dubuque HS) was on fire this weekend collecting five hits including a double, triple and a home run. The Ole Miss Commit was also impressive on the mound collecting three strike outs in his two innings pitched while topping out at 89 miles per hour with his fastball.

Also Considered:

Luke Anderson (2020, Central HS) crushed the ball this weekend, collecting three hits including a HR and four RBI for DRBA Runnin Reds 2019/20. Anderson, a primary LHP/1B has shown marked improvement in the past few seasons and could be an interesting two way prospect. Anderson is currently uncommitted.

Trey Morris (2020, Ankeny Centennial HS) smoked a home run for the second straight weekend for Iowa Sticks Romanchuk and has continued to hit well in critical situations, driving in seven RBI in the past two weekends. Morris is another intriguing two way prospect as he has not allowed a single run in eight innings pitched this Spring. Trey is uncommitted.

Keaton Gray (2020, Ankeny Centennial HS) was another Ankeny Centennial product that shined at the dish this weekend. Gray collected four total hits including a double and two RBI in his two games. Gray is a primary SS/2B and is uncommitted.

Top 2021 Performers

Pitcher of the Week: Seth Clausen (2021, Pleasant Valley HS) threw five no hit innings for QC Sticks Mitchell, walking just three. His fastball has made a huge jump over the past few seasons now sitting 78-80 mph. His mid 60's curveball provided good depth as it kept hitters off balance. Clausen is also uncommitted.

Also Considered:

Caleb Dicken (2021, Dallas-Center Grimes HS) did it all on Friday night for Iowa Sticks Conrad. The righty was perfect through through innings and struck out nine players, running his fastball up to 80. His complementary pitch, his slider, was probably most impressive causing a ton of swing and misses coming in the upper 60's to low 70's. Dicken also crushed a HR and drove in five RBI on the weekend. Dicken is uncommitted.

Keian Secrist (2021, Liberty HS) threw two innings of no hit baseball for Iowa Select Brune/Rath against Hitters 2. Keian is another who has made who strides on his fastball, now sitting primarily between 82 and 85 mph, jumping up to 86 at times. Secrist has plenty of room to grow and could add even more velo to his fastball while he continues to polish mechanics. Keian is uncommitted.

Jackson Nove (2021, CR Prairie HS) is a tall lanky lefty who was up to 83 on the weekend with five strikeouts. Nove also features a sweeping breaking ball that sits in the mid 60's.  Nove is uncommitted.

Everhart is uncommitted.

TJ Kimm (2021, Liberty HS) made loud contact consistently last weekend collecting two extra base hits including a double and a loud two run home run. Kimm is uncommitted.

Top 2022/23 Performers

Pitcher of the Week: Colten Clarahan (2022, Keota HS) was lights out this weekend for Gamers Academy 2022 on the mound. Clarahan collected 10 strike outs while topping out at 78 miles per hour with his fastball. Colten kept hitters off balance on the way to the no hitter with a sweeping curveball with good depth and spin.

Also Considered:

McKade Jelinek (2022, Linn Mar HS) pitched two and 1/3 innings for Iowa Select Norris between two games this weekend. McKade showcased a fastball up to 78 while striking out six batters. McKade only allowed two hits.

Batter of the Week: Jackson Manning (2023, Keosauqua, IA.) was hitting all weekend for Gamers Academy 2022 collecting four hits including one double and 2 RBI.

Also Considered:

Sam Wilt (2022, Anamosa HS) had another solid weekend at the plate, scattering two hits including a double and an RBI. Wilt is now hitting .400 on the season with two extra base hits including a HR.

Gable Mitchell (2022, Iowa City HS) smoked another HR and knocked in two RBI this weekend for Iowa Select Gutwiler, making it the second in as many weeks. Gable is a very impressive young shortstop and has impressed at all levels. We expect that to continue as he matures and develops as a hitter.

Oakie went on to throw three innings collecting four strikeouts, no base on balls, and one earned run. Oakie also adds a wicked slider that dips all the way down to 76 mph, keeping hitters honest. He has elite separation in his upper body and creates a ton of whip with explosive arm speed. Oakie was working the whole zone this weekend and showed some cut on his fastball as well. Oakie has already...

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. The Iowa Western commit threw 5.0 innings, allowing just 1 run, with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts to his credit.   There’s no surprise here, but...

Michael Flores (2026, NC) looking great through 4 innings pitched with 11 k’s. Great command and completely missing barrels. #2023WWBACoastalSophmoreFallInvatational pic.twitter.com/Oqd3WD0E05 — PG Coastal Scouting (@PG_Coastal) September 24, 2023 Michael Flores (2026, Mooresville, NC) put on an electric performance to watch for the SBA Futures 2026 in their matchup versus the Carolina Reds. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound, RHP did his job for his team today to keep them in the game. Flores throws with a high leg lift and creates some good motions towards the plate with his whippy action. Flores has a great feel for the zone and pounded strikes at a 66% rate. Flores generated swing and miss after swing and miss and it was clear he was in control out there on the mound. He sat in the 70-mph range to 79-mph range with his fastball with the ability to pinpoint it wherever he pleased....

James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Appearing in only his second PG tournament, Sherry turned in another great pitching performance after being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2023 16U PG Southeast Labor Day Classic. A high speed look at this 2B from Keon Johnson... #WWBAWorlds @PG_Georgia https://t.co/Ejl8GirIgk pic.twitter.com/ate7ro35cp — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) September 24, 2023 Keon Johnson (2026, Macon, Ga.) started off the morning loud, going down to get a pitch down and smoking a double that split the opposite field gap at a 92 mph exit velocity. The shortstop has one of the best hit tools in the class and has tremendous feel for the barrel. The swing is quiet and simple, staying loose through the zone. The ball jumps and the parts really work. At short, Johnson looked silky with good actions, range, and plenty of arm strength across. The game comes easy for the Georgia native, and still just 15, the all-around game is very well-refined for the age.  Jaxson Wood (2026, Hoover, Ala.) finished batting .500 over the tournament, including three extra-base hits. Deep South Fall Invitational Scout Notes

Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Ryan Riojas (‘26 TN) drives this...

The big and physical 6-foot-4, 210-pound arm threw a complete game, seven inning, one-hit shutout, striking out 13 and walking one. The fastball had downhill life to it, sitting in the 85-88 range for the entirety of the game. Garrison held the velocity and reached back for his fastest bullet of the game, at 89, in the seventh inning. Finishing the outing with 70% strikes, he filled up the zone and went right at hitters. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Harley’s build offers a good balance of strength and athleticism, making him a well-rounded prospect with intriguing upside moving forward.  .#VandyBoys commit Aiden O’Connell (‘24, NH) is back on the bump in the #NEQ...

Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he’s got a lanky frame with long limbs and plenty of room for physical projection. It’s a quick arm with solid arm speed throughout and he opened up sitting 85-87 mph with the fastball. The fastball showed good sinking life and he used it to get a lot...
