15u South: Day 4-5 Scout Notes

Photo: Grayson Murry (Perfect Game)

15u South WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Grayson Murry (2022, Troup, Texas) continued what has been a strong showing at the 2019 15u WWBA South National Championship on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a pair of loud doubles. Murry opened the scoring in Sunday’s game with a two-run double to the gap in right-center field, and followed it up with a ripped double down the left field line in his second trip to the plate. Murry has quick hands with a long bat path, and his present power to all fields is impressive. Murry has a tall and slender, 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame with plenty of room to fill out and add strength. As Murry continues to develop and add that strength in the frame, expect the power potential to develop as well.

In playoff action Tuesday, Murry took to the mound and delivered an outstanding start for Performance Baseball Texas 15u. Murry allowed no earned runs over 4 2/3 innings Tuesday, striking out five and walking just one. Murry pitched in the low-80s, topping at 85 mph. He creates good downhill plane to the fastball and he was able to attack hitters well with it to force early contact and outs. Murry changed speeds well, dropping in a big curveball at 60-64 mph at times during his start. He has a chance to be really special on the mound and it will be exciting to see how he improves on the mound.

Owen Peck (2022, Frisco, Texas) showed off a lot of tools to like on the diamond Monday afternoon for Dallas Tigers 15u – Polk. He went 2-for-4 with a pajr of singles and two RBI. Peck has a young frame at 5-foot-5, 140-pounds with an outstanding glove and developing arm strength from second base. He displayed a smooth swing with a direct hand path to the ball, and as his frame grows and develops he will continue to improve. Peck plays the game the right way and is a high motor kid you want in your lineup.

After an impressive performance on the mound Friday, Trenton Shaw (2022, Desoto, Texas) had a strong day at the plate for Dallas Tigers 15u – Polk on Monday afternoon. Shaw finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of loud doubles. He showed some present power to and through both gaps, and the 6-foot-4, 220-pound member of the 2022 class moves very well for his size. Time will tell if Shaw’s calling is on the mound or at the plate, but right now there is a lot to like at both spots.

Tyler Betts (2022, Round Rock, Texas) had a good day at the plate Monday, going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and a walk. Betts has a quick and compact swing, creating consistently hard contact in his at-bats. His ability to use all fields at the plate is an impressive piece to his game, and the rising sophomore looks to have a focused approach at the plate at all times. Betts has an athletic frame with plenty of room to grow, and it will be interesting to see how the power numbers rise as he continues to develop.

Damian Ruiz (2022, Livingston, Texas) showed some projection on the mound, pitching at 82-84 mph and topping at 87 mph with the fastball. He has a fast arm and athletic frame and improvement in the command will be seen with development of mechanics. Ruiz gets good tilt to the fastball, and I was really impressed with his ability to attack hitters and force early contact during his outing. While he’s still raw on the mound, expect big strides to be made as his career presses on.

Jalin Flores (2021, Helotes, Texas) did it all for the South Texas Sliders 15u Koehl on Tuesday, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and four RBI. He has a fluid swing at the plate and drives the ball well. Flores has a tall and slender frame with plenty of room to fill out, and the swing will develop more power as he continues to add strength. On the mound he picked up the win, throwing the final four innings, allowing just three hits while stiking out three batters.

Adrian Najar (2022, Grand Prairie, Texas) had an eye-popping performance on the mound Tuesday afternoon, throwing 82-84 mph and bumping an 86 and 87 once each. Najar has made great strides on the mound over the last year and his fast arm from a mid three-quarters slot leads to a fastball that has some late run to the arm side. Projection is the thing to highlight here, with a top fastball velocity that has risen by double digits in the last year and a half.

Jonathan Lowe (2022, Royce City, Texas) was impressive in playoff action for the second week in a row Tuesday night, allowing just one run over five innings and striking out five. Lowe featured a fastball in the low-80s, up to 85 mph on Tuesday, and he did a great job of pitching out of jams and finding ways to get big outs in the game. He creates good downward plane with the fastball and he pairs that well with a tight slider at 70-74 mph. With a 6-foot-1, 173-pound frame, Lowe has room to fill out and add strength.

Out of the bullpen Jett Williams (2022, Heath, Texas) showed exactly why he is one of the most exciting arms in the 2022 class. He worked at 89-91 mph with a lively fastball Tuesday, pairing it well with a hard slider that has some tight spin and bite across the plate at 75-77 mph. Williams has a young frame with some present strength and the righthander has a fast arm and gets down the mound with intensity. He was all over the zone on Tuesday night and was not afraid to attack hitters with that overpowering fastball. Ranked as the 122nd-best player in the 2022 class, it will be exciting to see Williams develop on the mound.

– Nate Schweers

Lane Stringer (2022, Clute, Texas) had an impressive day on the mound. The young righthanded pitcher had a high waist, long limbs and room to fill out his 6-foot-4, 190-pound projectable frame. Stringer created a lot of plane from his high-three quarters arm slot, worked his fastball from 82-85 mph with some sink and threw a tight, late breaking slider at 69-72 mph. Stringer attacked righthanded hitters hard in with his sinking fastball which created weak ground balls outs. He had a controlled, linear delivery and maintained balance with an extended release out front. He had a quick whippy arm action with a semi long circle in the back. Stringer allowed one hit, struck out six batters in four innings. With improvement to his command, Stringer will be a prospect to keep an eye on as he should continue to add strength and develop nicely in the future.

Listed as a primary shortstop, Derek Hernandez (2022, Corpus Christi, Texas) is a leadoff type hitter with a line drive swing plane and quick hands. The young lefthanded hitting prospect laid down a nice bunt for a single down the third base line in his first at-bat followed by an RBI double to right field in his second plate appearance.  He is hitting .308 through five games. Hernandez showed good actions at shortstop with above average footwork, semi-soft hands and an accurate arm with slight carry.

Trey Duffield (2022, Houston, Texas) is a two-way athlete who is ranked as the No. 5 righthanded pitcher in Texas for the class of 2022. Duffield started in the outfield for Texas Twelve Maroon 2022 and had an impressive day at the plate. He went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. He had a quick, short swing with a gap-to-gap approach. He stayed through the ball and was able to hit to all parts of the field with more power to his pull side. He does a good job of working the count and fighting off pitches resulting in long at-bats. Duffield has good arm strength in the outfield, took correct routes and fields the ball out front to get in a good position to throw.

Jayden Boyd (2024, Jacksonville, Texas) is a young, large-framed corner infielder for Baseball Texas 14u. Seeing the majority of his time at first base, Boyd had mobility around the bag, could scoop it and showed good baseball IQ for a prospect that will be entering the eighth grade this fall. While his skills are still raw at the plate, Boyd handles the bat well, he uses his hands to hit with a line drive swing plane and is a rotational type hitter that will improve offensively as he grows into his body and matures into high school.

Justin Lamkin (2022, Orange Grove, Texas) is a lefthanded pitcher for South Texas Sliders 15u Koehl. The young project had a very impressive outing during his four innings of work. Lamkin allowed only one hit and stuck out 10 to earn the win over Dallas Patriots 15 Navy. His fastball sat 78-81 mph with some arm-side run along with his curveball that was 65-67 mph that had 1-to-7 break. Lamkin was consistently in the strike zone with two pitches, working in and out while also pitching effectively up in the zone to create swings and misses. He has a 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame that has room to fill out and add strength over the next three years.

Diego Zuniga (2022, McAllen, Texas) is a young prospect that was fantastic on both sides of the ball.  He led the way for the South Texas Sliders 15u Koehl offense going 2-for-3 with a double and a one run scored. Zuniga is hitting .467 through six games. He also came in to close out the game over Dallas Patriots 15 Navy. He pitched one inning, allowed one hit and struck out two. His fastball topped out at 80 mph and complemented his fastball with a 65 mph curveball that had 11-to-5 break.

Armando Rocha (2022, Houston, Texas) is a two-way athlete for Adidas Baseball USA 2022 – Moore. Rocha got the start in playoff action against a very talented Texas Twelve Maroon 2022. He threw from a high three-quarters slot, had a very quick arm with a shortened arm circle in the back and stayed online during is simple, downhill delivery. Rocha worked 5 2/3 innings, allowed one hit, zero earned runs and stuck out seven along the way. His fastball sat 81-83 mph and topped out at 87 in the first inning. Rocha did a great job of working hard in to righthanded hitters with the fastball that had arm-side run and sink with riding life at times. He kept hitters off balance with a plus slider that he threw in any count at 71-73 mph. Rocha has pitchability and will be a very interesting prospect for college coaches to keep on eye on.

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. The Iowa Western commit threw 5.0 innings, allowing just 1 run, with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts to his credit.   There’s no surprise here, but...

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound, RHP did his job for his team today to keep them in the game. Flores throws with a high leg lift and creates some good motions towards the plate with his whippy action. Flores has a great feel for the zone and pounded strikes at a 66% rate. Flores generated swing and miss after swing and miss and it was clear he was in control out there on the mound. A high speed look at this 2B from Keon Johnson... #WWBAWorlds @PG_Georgia https://t.co/Ejl8GirIgk pic.twitter.com/ate7ro35cp — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) September 24, 2023 Keon Johnson (2026, Macon, Ga.) started off the morning loud, going down to get a pitch down and smoking a double that split the opposite field gap at a 92 mph exit velocity. The shortstop has one of the best hit tools in the class and has tremendous feel for the barrel. The swing is quiet and simple, staying loose through the zone. The ball jumps and the parts really work. At short, Johnson looked silky with good actions, range, and plenty of arm strength across. The game comes easy for the Georgia native, and still just 15, the all-around game is very well-refined for the age.  Jaxson Wood (2026, Hoover, Ala.) finished batting .500 over the tournament, including three extra-base hits. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Ryan Riojas (‘26 TN) drives this...

The fastball had downhill life to it, sitting in the 85-88 range for the entirety of the game. Garrison held the velocity and reached back for his fastest bullet of the game, at 89, in the seventh inning. Finishing the outing with 70% strikes, he filled up the zone and went right at hitters. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he’s got a lanky frame with long limbs and plenty of room for physical projection. It’s a quick arm with solid arm speed throughout and he opened up sitting 85-87 mph with the fastball. The fastball showed good sinking life and he used it to get a lot...
