Meridian Panthers 14u Win PG Spring Frost Title

MARIETTA, Ga. – It was another battle of powerhouse Southeast baseball organizations as the weather could not have been better this weekend. Players took the field in hopes of snagging an early spring trophy to add to the case and give them something to build on as the summer creeps near.

In the Semifinals, STB 14u Cox took on 5 Star National 14u Lassitter in what would end up being a pitching duel. Hunter Smith got the start for STB and went on to carve up the opposing lineup as he struck out five batters and only gave up a single hit in a gem of a five-inning outing. He did not walk a single batter and put his team on a fast track to a win.

On the other side, Chase Fralick threw a gem of his own as he went four innings and struck out two batters while only allowing three hits. Fralick did not give up a run and ultimately ran out of gas, letting his relief enter the game. Offensively, 5 Star’s Bricen Smith would go on to knock the only run in for 5 Star early in the game in the second inning.

STB did not score until the bottom of the seventh. Arnold Abernathy had a battle of an at-bat and eventually got on base with a knock back up the middle. After a few past balls and some quality at-bats, Sean Greene knocked in the tying run and we were headed into extra innings.

Israel Rosseter entered as relief for Smith and filled it up as he ran into some contact but battled thru it with his defense playing solidly behind him. In the bottom of the eighth, with two outs, Henry Rumph started a rally and knocked a single back up the middle. He advanced on a wild pitch and then Logan Bailey would go on to walk it off as he knocked in the winning run and pushed STB 14u Cox to the championship game.

On the other side of the bracket, Meridian Panthers took 14u took on GA Academy Power 14u Myers in what turned out to be an exciting ball game as well. Ford Thompson got the start for Meridian and pitched a gem. He threw five scoreless innings while only giving up a hit.

Meridian Jumped out ahead early as Caleb Brown led the scoring off with a single up the middle in the first inning. Another score would come in due to a past ball. The game slowed until the fourth inning when Mason Davis jump started the inning with a single and ended up scoring on a Makhi Buckley single. Cade Brown also got in on the action as he doubled and knocked in a run himself.

The Panthers were out to a 5-0 lead until the sixth inning rolled around and GA Academy awoke from a slumber. A new pitcher entered the game and they jumped all over him. The led the inning off with two walks from Isaac Queen and Eli Howren who both went on to score. Ryan Johnson knocked in one of those runs and the rally was on from that point. Caleb Miele had the most clutch at-bat of the day as he squared up a fastball and doubled. With the bases juiced, he knocked in three runs and before anyone had time to think, it was a tie ball game going into the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Brett Andrews led off the inning with a timely double of his own. Jon Holcomb hit a long fly ball to left field to record a walk off sac fly and the Meridian Panthers were on the way to the championship game.

In the championship game, Meridian Panthers took on STB 14u Cox for the hardware. Porter Berryman got the start for the Panthers and threw four innings of great baseball. He only gave up one run on three hits. The game was kicked off by a walk and then Brown stayed hot and knocked in a run in the bottom of the first.

On the other side, Bryce Clavon got the start for STB and was throwing hard as he was up into the low- to-mid-80s. STB would not answer the bell until the top of the fourth when Clavon led the inning off with a first pitch single. He went on to score due to some throwing errors and sloppy play by Meridian.

Meridian got right back to it in the bottom of the fourth when Brown led the inning off with a loud double. He would go to score from a Thompson single. Just as quickly as STB tied the game, Meridian was right back ahead by a run.

Scoring turned into a stalemate until the bottom of the sixth when Meridian jumped back on them. Cade Brown singled to lead off the inning and then Brown tripled to right field and knocked in an insurance run. Eric Parker had a quality at-bat and went on to knock Brown in for a 4-1 lead which would end up being the final score giving the Meridian Panthers the championship trophy.
