16u/17u West World Series Scout Notes: Day 1

Day two kicked off with a battle between AZ T-Rex Easton and MountainWest. New Mexico commit Justin Still (2021, Chandler, Ariz.) gave AZ T-Rex a fine start going 2 1/3 innings with four K’s. He still has a very quick arm action that flies up to the window despite reaching down and back with his arm stroke. His high three-quarters to over the top slot does create some natural arm side run on his fastball up to 90 mph. Still’s fastball definitely has some deception to it thanks to his very short arm action, however, once hitters are able to get on time, the pitch is pretty flat to the plate and Still has to work hard to keep the ball down. Two MountainWest players went deep off of him in the same inning so it’s something he’ll have to work on as he continues to mature his arsenal on the hill. His curveball is a plus pitch with a larger 1-to-7 shape and has a pretty big hump out of the hand before diving hard late. It’s a pitch that possesses plenty of swing and miss ability. His changeup will actually cut across the plate, making it an effective pitch against lefties as well, however, he did not use it a ton in game.
