Mid-Atlantic Scout Notes: 7/16 & 7/17

Action all over the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast region got started on Thursday, with numerous teams playing in their first Perfect Game tournament of the year. From Long Island, NY to Atlantic City, NJ; these players were ready to display the work they have put in during shutdown.


James (Jake) Griffin (2023, Kingston, PA) is a name we have come to know these past few years. The strongly built Griffin has participated in many Perfect Game events, showcasing high upside on both the mound and at the plate. The University of Tennessee commit got the start in Game One of pool play for the Long Island Body Armor Titans United and surely did not disappoint. The young righthander worked three shutout innings while striking out four hitters and not allowing a hit. Griffin’s fastball worked in the 85-87 mph range for the most part, topping out at 89 mph and showing his usual downhill plane and life through the strike zone. The Kingston, PA native works from a fairly simple operation, repeating well with efficient lower half movements down the mound and a higher three-quarters arm slot. The secondary offerings are still developing but flash the potential for a future swing-and-miss pitch. There is plenty of projection remaining on both sides of the ball and it is still early enough to leave the optionality open for two-way capabilities as Griffin moves forward.
