One of the best starts of the day came in the first slot over at Terry Park as South Charlotte’s Jake Hunter (2021, Rockwell, N.C.) was spectacular, going the distance in a complete game shutout and effectively sending the South Charlotte Panthers to bracket play. At a large and durable 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, the East Carolina commit is able to retain his stuff deep into games and maintain both the velocity and sharpness of the stuff to be effective late. Hunter’s gone from stop-to-stop and start-to-start shutting down top flight lineups and that continued against the San Diego Show on Saturday morning. The right-hander pounded the zone with strikes and a fastball that worked in the 87-90 mph range with an immense amount of riding life at times. In the early innings, Hunter worked off the fastball and mixed in a changeup that was fairly effective, especially against a lefthanded dominant lineup and the first time through the order. He eventually started mixing in breaking balls that show solid average potential and Hunter has three pitches he can attack you with. Being young for the grade with a huge frame, Hunter checks a lot of boxes already and when you consider his history of dealing in big games he’s a prime helium candidate.
