Champs Crowned at WWBA Northeast

Champions were crowned on Monday at the Perfect Game WWBA 17U Northeast Championship and the PG WWBA 16U Northeast Championship. Championship Monday took place at both Richmond County Youth Complex in Staten Island (17U) and Columbus Park in Piscataway, N.J. (16U). The teams made it through a grueling couple days despite the extremely high temperatures.
 
 
.9ers Baseball Club completes the clean sweep to take home the 17U NE Championship

The Wall, N.J. based .9ers Baseball Club descended on Staten Island this weekend with an experienced roster of Division-I commits and talented uncommitted prospects. They navigated around the hot and humid weather, going unscathed throughout the five-day event by claiming a 7-2 victory over a previously-unbeaten East Coast Ghost Squad in the title game.



The Niners got to the final on the back and right-handed arm of Army commit Jack Frankovic (2022, Little Silver, N.J.) as he threw a complete game shutout over an unbeaten 5 Star National 17U Adrenaline. The strongly-built primary outfielder held the talented 5 Star squad in check, holding a team that was averaging 12 runs per game to just four hits and the aforementioned zero runs. Frankovic ran his fastball up to 86 mph early before settling into the low-80s for the duration of his seven innings. He mixed in a sharp breaking ball to disrupt the timing of hitters effectively, as he maneuvered through an extremely deep lineup. For his efforts in their semifinal victory, Frankovic was named the events Most Valuable Pitcher.
 
East Coast Ghost made their way into the championship game unscathed, after securing a come-from-behind victory over a scrappy, well-coached Next Level Scout team. CJ (Christopher) Wisniewski was the star in this one, as he drove in 5 runs to culminate the comeback with his fifth-inning grand slam. Collin Kratzer provided three scoreless innings out of the ‘pen to secure the victory, as the energetic Army commit ran his fastball up to 88 mph in this one and allowed just one hit along the way.
 
The championship matchup was a relatively close affair through four innings, as East Coast Ghost pushed across a single run in the top of the third by virtue of well-manufactured run. Both starting pitchers were on point early, as they navigated through talented lineups on both sides to minimize damage well.
 
The .9ers broke through in the bottom of the fifth, as they scored their first two runs by virtue of a leadoff single by Charlie Tallman (2022, Fair Haven, N.J.), a walk and two consecutive hit-by-pitches. Duke commit Andrew Fischer (2022, Wall, N.J.) continued the scoring for the .9ers, driving in two more runs on his single to right field. Nicholas Lovarco (2022, Wall, N.J.) followed Fischer’s single up with a deep two-RBI triple to center field, capping off a seven-run inning for his team. Columbia commit Andrew Argenziano (2022, Closter, N.J.) and uncommitted Anthony Bubba (2023, Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) held East Coast Ghost to just two runs over the course of seven innings, allowing just three hits to a very talented lineup.

5 Star National 17U Adrenaline’s Beck Milner (2022, Park City, Utah) took home Most Valuable Player honors, after hitting .588 (10-for-17) during the event. The Yale commit smashed three home runs and drove in 18 runs.

MVP Beast 2023 National Takes Home The 16U NE Championship

Our first semifinal on Championship Monday featured two heavyweights in the form of Sportika Baseball Academy 16u Elite and MA Show 16u National.

George Mason right-handed pitching commit Tyler Kane (2022, Manalapan, N.J.) took the mound for Sportika, dealing strikes early and often. Kane was a defender’s best friend, attacking hitters aggressively without wasting any pitches. He featured two plus off-speed pitches, one being an 11-5 slurve and the other a gross fading changeup that looked exactly like a fastball coming out of the hand. Kane held velo well, sitting 83-86 for almost the entirety of his outing while topping 87 with a heavy fastball.
 
To close out the win 2-0 for Sportika was Virginia Tech commit Justin Herbstman (2023, Matawan, N.J.). One look at Herbstman and anyone will tell you the tall lefty is extremely projectable with the potential to add strength and shoot his velo up even more. While raw, Herbstman has a lot to like in terms of tools, pumping an 85 mph fastball from a very low whippy three-quarters arm slot with a deceptive 11-5 curve to complement. Herbstman is another name who has yet to come even close to hitting his ceiling.
 
On the offensive front for Sportika’s playoff run was 2023 SS prospect Reece Moroney (Fair Haven, NJ). Moroney can only be described as a pure hit machine, drilling balls to all parts of the field with a sweet smooth stroke. Moroney can’t be pitched a certain way as he’ll hit the ball exactly where it’s pitched with a level line drive approach. He was effective on the bases and displayed super soft hands at SS with effortless transitions and zip across the diamond.
 
Sportika’s reign came to an end however when they were defeated by MVP Beast 2023 National by a score of 12-3. Tournament MVP George Trimigliozzi (2023, Islip, N.Y.) did all he possibly could for Beast over the course of the tournament, including racking up 11 hits and 6 RBI. Trimigliozzi displayed quick hands with a direct bat path to the baseball, using all parts of the field with power. He was certainly an aggressive hitter at the plate, jumping on the first pitch he liked and dictating the at-bat on his terms. What’s most impressive about Trimigliozzi was his ability to effect the game from all aspects, including pitching and in the outfield. He showcased a live arm from both positions and gunned a runner trying to tag from third on Championship Monday.

Trimigliozzi was named the MVP of the tournament for his efforts, a well-deserved honor for the Islip native. Kane was given MV-Pitcher honors.
