Deshun Dixon follows in brothers' footsteps

Jim Ecker
MARIETTA, Ga. -- Everybody at Terry High School in Mississippi knows the Dixon family. The four Dixon brothers have been starring for the sports teams there for most of the 21st Century.

"Eight years or more," Deshun Dixon, the youngest of the brothers, said proudly.

Anthony Dixon, the eldest brother, has rushed for 2,603 yards and 30 touchdowns during his football career at Mississippi State and has been an all-SEC selection. He'll be a senior for the Bulldogs this fall.

Antwon Dixon, the No.2 son, originally signed with Mississippi State and plans to play football at an NCAA Division II school in Texas this year. Rashun Dixon, third in line, played baseball at Mississippi State and is currently playing Single-A ball for the Oakland A's in Vancouver after being a 10th-round pick last year.

That brings us to Deshun, who excels in baseball and football, a friendly guy who's had a tough act to follow. He'll be a senior at Tyler High School this year.

"It's been hard, you know, following in their footsteps, doing what they did, trying to copy that, trying to match it," he said after playing for the East Coast Grays Navy team in the World Wood Bat Association 17U National Championships this week. "But, it's been hard AND great. Great competition."

Deshun is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed pitcher and center fielder. He's thrown a 93 mph fastball, but hopes to top that after he fully recovers from a minor elbow problem. He pitched two effective innings on Thursday night and felt fine, but was told to shut it down. "I could have gone longer," he said.

Deshun was a running back at Terry High School the last three years, but he'll probably change positions this fall. "I'll probably be the quarterback," he said, smiling, looking forward to the challenge, "so we'll see how that works out."

Deshun likes football, but he loves baseball.

"Which one is my favorite? Yeah, baseball," he confirmed. "Baseball is the ultimate favorite. I've been playing it all my life. I've been playing baseball since I was 6. I just started playing football in middle school. So baseball has probably been the most important thing since I've been playing."

He likes putting on his spikes and playing the game.

"It's just fun," he said. "It's fun to play, fun to be out here, fun to compete. Everything is fun about it. Even having bad games, you've got to come back and have a good one."
