Southeast Fall Showdown Scout Notes

Picking up where he left off a couple weeks ago in Jupiter, Georgia Tech commit John Cooper Williams (2023, Woodstock, Ga.) showcased his plus tools all over the field this weekend in Atlanta as he hit .429 over his club’s five-game slate, ending in a championship and MVP honors Sunday night. An uber-athletic left-handed hitting outfielder from River Ridge High School in his hometown, Williams stands at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, and deploys a short, quick swing from a slightly open, low hand setup from the left side. With a small step for timing and quick twitch in the box, Williams is able to barrel pitches with advanced consistency as he went gap-to-gap all weekend. A plus runner, Williams makes things happen on the bases as he runs with aggression and acumen, regularly displaying the ability to take the extra base, even when it isn’t noticeably available. Lastly, JC’s athleticism doesn’t waver in the outfield as he has plus feel for the leather with ability to cover a lot of ground and make all plays hit his way. Yet another carry tool is Williams’ arm which can play in multiple outfield spots, adding versatility to any defensive alignment. As close to a five-tool talent you’re going to see from a 2023 at this stage, it is fun to forecast where Williams’ tools will be in two years when he gains draft eligibility in the spring of 2023, but one thing is for certain, he’ll be in the early discussion.
