High School Showdown Scout Notes: Day 1

Samuel Schmidt (2023, Hoover, Ala.) time and time again slammed the door shut for the Hoover Bucs as he was able to make one run stick in a 1-0 win on Friday night. The right-hander ran his fastball up to 87 mph but pitched at 82-85 mph for most of the evening working to all four quadrants of the zone and generating some movement to the arm side when he mixed in the two-seam. Schmidt went to a changeup and curveball off of the fastball as his two off-speed offerings, with the curveball giving him the most success. Later in the game it was the curveball that he went to that really allowed him to work through the middle of the Parkview lineup a third time. At 6-foot, 160 pounds, his frame shows some solid projection left in it with room to add strength, making him a pretty interesting prospect to keep an eye on as the season moves along.

Ford Thompson (2024, Snellville, Ga.) gave Parkview a heck of a start on Friday night, allowing just one run over five innings. After allowing the run in the first, Thompson went on to retire nine of the next 10 Hoover hitters. The southpaw pitched off his fastball that touched 87 but sat in the mid-80s for most of the night. His arm actions hides the ball well and when he is doing that and hitting spots, he is able to create some very late swings and misses from hitters. He showed some natural feel for the changeup with fading action to the arm side and landed the curveball when needed as a get-me-over pace change to start off hitters. Thompson, a Georgia commit, showed some real competitiveness in this start to give his club every opportunity as he attacked hitters all night and was able to work pretty low-stress innings for the most part.
