PG Softball March Madness Scout Notes

BURLINGTON, Iowa - Twenty-four teams rolled into Burlington from March 4-6 for the Perfect Game March Madness Tournament, the final three-day tournament of the winter indoor season.

14u Division

After two days of pool play, the 12 teams in this division were seeded into groups of four and placed in the Bronze, Silver or Gold Championship brackets. Winning the Bronze Championship was 563 Force 14u, and Nebraska Gold 309 took the Silver Championship. The Gold Championship was won by Dubuque Thunder 14u Black with a 8-1 win over Southern Iowa Savage.

MV-Pitcher was given to Dubuque Thunder 14u Black RHP Emily Koranda (2025, Marion, Iowa). The Linn-Mar High School freshman threw seven innings, giving up one hit while striking out 15 and sitting at 60 mph, with a top velo of 62 mph. Koranda has the full assortment of pitches and has the ability to throw them to both sides of the plate for strikes. A fluid motion that appears to be easily repeated will aid this young pitcher as she matures and gains strength.

MV-Player went to Dubuque Thunder 14u Black’s Morgan Hosch (2025, Epworth, Iowa). Hosch, a Western Dubuque High School freshman, displayed a great approach at the plate, hunting for pitches that she could drive. Hosch utilizes a slow, deliberate load to get into her back leg prior to initiating her lower half to get to launch. Good use of her lower half helps her generate power and torque to drive the ball into the gaps. Of Hosch’s seven hits, four were doubles and she collected four RBI.

In a tournament that featured several young arms, Alexa Guyer (2027, Indianola, Iowa) was the workhorse of the tournament, working 17 innings for her Southern Iowa Savage team. Guyer, a LHP, sat 54 mph, with a top velo of 56 in striking out 20 batters this weekend. Guyer, a pitch-to-contact type pitcher, utilizes a fastball, changeup and drop curve to keep batters off balance. Guyer’s best asset at this time may be the natural movement her ball has, sliding into right-handed batters, resulting in balls being pounded into the turf for routine outs.

Southern Iowa Savage teammate Taylor Henson (2025, Lamoni, Iowa) led the tournament with eight hits. Henson, a left-handed slapper, is lean and lanky and built for speed. While still developing her craft, Henson utilizes bunts, soft slaps and hitting away to get on base. Once on base, she continues to cause problems as evident by her tournament-leading six stolen bases. Henson, a RHP/MIF, finished the tournament with a .800 batting average and a .846 OBP.

Addy Jo Lincoln (2027, Rock Island, Ill.) batted leadoff for Nebraska Gold 309. The left-handed swinging Lincoln showed that she knows what to do with the bat. Lincoln collected six hits, four singles, a double, and a home run that equated to six RBI. Lincoln also scored seven runs to assist her team to the Silver Bracket Championship. Her swing and approach lends itself to the leadoff spot as she makes good contact and shows discipline at the plate to draw walks. She finished the tournament with a .667 average and .750 OBP.

Quick Hits

Brenna Williams (2026, Iowa City, Iowa) had seven hits, with a double and two home runs, and six RBI.

Riley Sweetland (2026, Bettendorf, Iowa) had seven hits, five doubles and a home run, along with two stolen bases.

Memphis Gibson (2026, Dubuque, Iowa) is a RHP who had a 3-0 record with 13 strikeouts and zero earned runs.

Enya Heller (2026, Randolph, Wis.) is a RHP who recorded 13 strikeouts with top velo of 58 mph.

18u Division

Twelve teams were seeded into the Bronze, Silver and Gold Brackets after two days of pool play to fight it out on Championship Sunday. This division featured several pitchers throwing in the low- to mid-60s but also was loaded with quality hitters eager to step in the box to face this challenge.

As was the case in the 14u Division, 563 Force 18u won the Bronze Division to match their 14u team. The Silver Division was won by the Lady Expos - Houselog. The Iowa Bandits, after needing two innings of ITB to get past Iowa Outlaws Select ‘06 Andrew, finished off the tournament with a 8-1 win over Team Heat Softball 18u - Lowe to claim the Gold Division Championship.

MV-Pitcher went to Iowa Bandit right handed pitcher Madison Oetzmann (2023, Urbandale, Iowa). The Waukee Northwest High School junior was consistently sitting at 58 mph with a top velocity of 60 mph. In her 14 innings of work, Oetzmann struck out 29 and did not give up an earned run. Although not overpowering, Oetzmann showed the ability to work both sides of the plate with all her pitches. Her spin pitches displayed a tight spin and late movement, resulting in swing-and-miss type stuff. The ability to put the ball where she wants it should play well at the next level. Hey, take a look, Madison Oetzmann is an uncommitted 2023 with talent.

Bandit teammate Jena Young (2023, Winterset, Iowa) was named the MV-Player of the March Madness Tournament. The University of Iowa commit hit .692 for the tournament, collecting nine hits, which included three doubles and two tanks. Young, a left-handed hitting middle infielder, hit in the one-spot and finished the weekend with a .750 OBP. Young uses the whole field, taking what the pitcher gives her, showing gap-to-gap power. The swing is fluid, with great use of her legs and hips to generate power and drive. The swing is mechanically sound and should hold up at the next level.

One of the hardest throwers of the weekend was Team Heat Softball 18u - Lowe’s Peyton Paulsen (2023, Dubuque, Iowa). The Dubuque Hempstead High School junior sat consistently at 61 mph, with a top velo of 64 mph. In her 11 innings of work, Paulson struck out 22 and did not allow an earned run. Paulson has a smooth, almost effortless, delivery that makes it appear she has more in the tank. With a full arsenal of pitches, Paulson does not have to rely on her fastball to get outs. The uncommitted Paulson could be finding a college to call home in the near future if she continues to pitch as she did this weekend.

Iowa Outlaws Select ‘06 Andrew’s Dakota Lake (2023, Des Moines, Iowa) was another outstanding pitcher showcasing her talent this weekend. The uncommitted Saydel High School junior was consistently 60-61 mph, with a top recorded velo of 63 mph. In her 13 innings of work, Lake recorded 26 strikeouts using a variety of pitches, but it appeared a plus rise ball, that jumped out of the zone, was her go-to pitch for the punchout. Lake, who stands 6-foot tall with long levers, would appear to have the potential to develop added velocity and spin rate in the future. Again, another talented 2023 that is uncommitted.

Hitters are going to hit and Lady Expos - Houselog’s Lydia Ettema (2023, Peosta, Iowa) led the way. Although having been highlighted as a pitcher previously, this weekend was about hitting. The Dubuque Hempstead High School junior collected nine hits that included two doubles and three bombs. She knocked in 10 runs, scored eight and swiped a bag for good measure. It should be noted that one blast was said to have been one of the farthest hit balls in the bubble to date. Ettema hits from a slightly opened stance while remaining tall. She gets to parallel at launch and utilizes her lower half to generate power. Bat path is slightly elevated, as the result of good torso turn and shoulder tilt, as would be expected from a player trying to hit the ball into the parking lot. A very versatile two-way player that is currently uncommitted.

Iowa Bandit's Sydney Potter (2023, Runnells, Iowa) had a couple of key hits, including the walk-off game winner to get her Iowa Bandits team into the Gold Championship final. But where Potter shines is behind the plate. The South Dakota State commit called all pitches for a talented Bandit pitching staff, kept her pitchers focused, and made sure the defense knew where to go with the ball. Watching from behind the screen, you could see that Potter didn’t make any unnecessary movements. She kept her body quiet, utilizing subtle movements and soft hands to pull pitches just off the plate back into the zone to pick up some extra strikes. The only time things got chaotic was when it was time to pick off a runner. Potter possesses a plus arm and a quick release and when throwing from her knees is figured in, it results in a pop time of 1.75 - 1.79.

Midwest Invitational Scout Notes

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. Flores has a great feel for the zone and pounded strikes at a 66% rate. Flores generated swing and miss after swing and miss and it was clear he was in control out there on the mound. James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he’s got a lanky frame with long limbs and plenty of room for physical projection.
