Week 5 Spring League Recap

Photo: Jalen Martinez (Perfect Game)
Easter weekend was the final weekend for the Iowa Spring League as the weather finally turned in a good way. This weekend again brought many great performances, especially on the mound. We had some performers run away with their honors this week as they really stood out with their performances. Top hitters and pitchers from each grad year are listed below as well as those considered for the honor.

Top 2019 Performers

Pitcher of the Week:
Harrison Cook (2019, Prairie HS) threw two innings to wrap up the spring league featuring a fastball up to 90 miles per hour and a sharp curve ball at 77 miles per hour. The University of Kentucky commit fanned all six of the batters he faced during his outing on Saturday.

Also Considered: Blake Grevengoed (2019, West Des Moines Valley HS) makes his second appearance in the Top Performers list after pitching three solid innings for Iowa Sticks Pearson. The righty was up to 85 with his fastball while striking out five batters and only allowing a single hit. Grevengoed is committed to DMACC.

Nick Gottilla (2019, Davenport Assumption HS) pitched two scoreless innings on Friday night, running his fastball up to 88 miles per hour and striking out three. The projectable lefty gave up a single hit in the outing and walked three. Gottilla had a good spring on the mound, striking out 11 over five innings while surrendering just a single hit. Gottilla is committed to UCF.

Batter of the Week:
Ethan Herber (2019, Dubuque Senior HS) had a huge weekend at the plate for DRBA Senior Rams Feeder, collecting four hits including a triple and two loud home runs all while driving in six runs on the day. Herber is uncommitted.

Also Considered:
Will Kranz (2019, Davenport Central HS) continued to put on a show offensively on the Spring, collecting four hits, including a triple. Kranz also showed off his speed, swiping eight bags. Kranz has done it all offensively this Spring. He is uncommitted.

Zack Beekmann (2019, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) collected three hits in the double header last weekend including a triple. Beekmann drove in six runs while scoring one himself on the weekend as well. Beekman is uncommitted.

Top 2020 Performers

Pitcher of the Week: Alec Nigut (2020, Des Moines Roosevelt HS) had another great weekend on the mound, this time striking out eight over three innings for Iowa Select Pearson. The lefty was up to 83 with his fastball and did not surrender a single hit. Nigut is committed to the University of Iowa.

Also Considered:
Kennan Winn (2020 Pekin Community HS) collected five strikeouts in two innings pitched while running his fastball up to 84 miles per hour while allowing 0 walks or hits. Kennan is uncommitted.

Reece Beuter (2020, Dike-New Hartford) was lights out on the mound for EMB 1 throwing four innings while collecting six strike outs. Reece was able to run his fastball up to 86 miles per hour during his outing on Saturday. Beuter is uncommitted.

Batter of the Week:
Alex Pendergast (2020, Des Moines Roosevelt HS) scored two runs and drove in two runs while tallying three hits including one triple for Iowa Sticks Pearson. Pendergast is a primary SS/3B and is uncommitted.

Also Considered: Tyler Tscherter (2020, Gladbrook-Reinbeck HS) had a solid weekend both at the plate and on the mound for Iowa Select 2019 Sole/Frazier. The primary middle infielder collected three hits including a triple and scored three times on Saturday. Tscherter also pitched three shutout innings, striking out two while working his fastball up to 87. Tscherter is uncommitted.

Carter Baumler (2020, Dowling HS) blasted a home run on his way to collecting three hits and four RBI on the weekend. On the mound carter threw two and 2/3 innings while striking out seven with his fastball topping out at 90 miles per hour.

Top 2021 Performers

Pitcher of the Week: Logan Runde (2021, Dubuque Hempstead HS) is another two way talent that has really impressed this Spring, being one of the top hitters and pitchers in the class. Runde was pitcher of the week last week and defended his honor, striking out seven batters in three innings of work. Runde finished the Spring League with  24 strikeouts and allowed only a single hit in nine and 2/3 innings.  Runde is uncommitted.

Colin Streff (2021, Linn Mar HS) had another great weekend on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings. The lefty was up to 78 on his fastball with a complementary curveball in the upper 60's. Streff had a remarkably great Spring, pitching 16 innings and striking out 27, surrendering only five hits the entire Spring.

Ethan Luzum (2021, South Winneshiek HS) is another pitcher with a solid week for Iowa Select 2021 JT. Luzum struck out nine over four innings while walking 0 and surrendering just two hits. Luzum's fastball reached 80 this weekend. Luzum is uncommitted.

Also Considered:
Jacob Zahner (2021, Burlington HS) Only allowed three hits in four innings pitched while tallying 8 strike outs and running the fastball up to 79 miles per hour. Zahner is uncommitted.

Batter of the Week:
Caden Kipper (2021, Pleasant Valley HS) is a primary 3B who hits from the left side. He made a lot of loud contact this weekend for QC Sticks Mitchell, falling just a triple short of the cycle in one of his games and walking it off with a grand slam. Kipper is uncommitted.

Also Considered:
Brady Kauzlarich (2021, Centerville HS) could have easily won both pitcher of the week or batter of the week, however he was slightly snuffed out of both honors b the winners. Kauzlarich was probably the most well rounded player of the weekend in the 2021 class, collecting four singles, scoring five runs and stealing five bags at the plate. He also pitched four innings of one hit baseball, striking out six and working his fastball to 83 mph. Kauzlarich is uncommitted.

Top 2022/23 Performers

Pitcher of the Week:
Ashton Westphall (2022, Bettendorf HS) had a weekend to remember on the mound for Iowa Select 2022 Gutwiler, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while allowing just a single hit. The righty ran his fastball up to 81 mph while displaying a curveball at 62-65 as his complementary pitch. Westphall has enjoyed a great Spring on the mound, surrendering an ERA of just 1.80 over 18 innings and striking out 21. Westphall is uncommitted.

Also Considered:
Colten Clarahan (2022, Keota HS) enjoyed another solid day on the mound for Gamers Academy 2022, striking out eight batters over four innings. The righty was up to 77 with a tight spinning curveball at 67. Clarahan uncommitted.

Batter of the Week:
Dalton Reeves (2022, Davis County Community HS) hit just about everything this weekend, collecting a league high five hits over his two games this weekend, including both a double and a triple. Dalton is a primary infielder and right handed pitcher. Dalton also enjoyed a solid Spring, finishing the campaign at a .478 mark. Dalton is uncommitted.

Also Considered:
Gable Mitchell (2022, Iowa City HS) was his normal self this weekend, impressing both offensively and on the mound. He not only struck out six over four innings of work, he also collected three singles and scored four runs on the day for Iowa Select 2022 Gutwiler. Mitchell is without a doubt one of the top players in his class in the state of Iowa. He is uncommitted.

Oakie went on to throw three innings collecting four strikeouts, no base on balls, and one earned run. Oakie also adds a wicked slider that dips all the way down to 76 mph, keeping hitters honest. He has elite separation in his upper body and creates a ton of whip with explosive arm speed. Oakie was working the whole zone this weekend and showed some cut on his fastball as well. Oakie has already...

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. The Iowa Western commit threw 5.0 innings, allowing just 1 run, with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts to his credit.   There’s no surprise here, but...

Great command and completely missing barrels. #2023WWBACoastalSophmoreFallInvatational pic.twitter.com/Oqd3WD0E05 — PG Coastal Scouting (@PG_Coastal) September 24, 2023 Michael Flores (2026, Mooresville, NC) put on an electric performance to watch for the SBA Futures 2026 in their matchup versus the Carolina Reds. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound, RHP did his job for his team today to keep them in the game. Flores throws with a high leg lift and creates some good motions towards the plate with his whippy action. Flores has a great feel for the zone and pounded strikes at a 66% rate. Flores generated swing and miss after swing and miss and it was clear he was in control out there on the mound. He sat in the 70-mph range to 79-mph range with his fastball with the ability to pinpoint it wherever he pleased....

James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Appearing in only his second PG tournament, Sherry turned in another great pitching performance after being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2023 16U PG Southeast Labor Day Classic. A high speed look at this 2B from Keon Johnson... #WWBAWorlds @PG_Georgia https://t.co/Ejl8GirIgk pic.twitter.com/ate7ro35cp — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) September 24, 2023 Keon Johnson (2026, Macon, Ga.) started off the morning loud, going down to get a pitch down and smoking a double that split the opposite field gap at a 92 mph exit velocity. The shortstop has one of the best hit tools in the class and has tremendous feel for the barrel. The swing is quiet and simple, staying loose through the zone. The ball jumps and the parts really work. At short, Johnson looked silky with good actions, range, and plenty of arm strength across. The game comes easy for the Georgia native, and still just 15, the all-around game is very well-refined for the age.  Jaxson Wood (2026, Hoover, Ala.) finished batting .500 over the tournament, including three extra-base hits. The primary...

Deep South Fall Invitational Scout Notes

Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Ryan Riojas (‘26 TN) drives this...

The big and physical 6-foot-4, 210-pound arm threw a complete game, seven inning, one-hit shutout, striking out 13 and walking one. The fastball had downhill life to it, sitting in the 85-88 range for the entirety of the game. Garrison held the velocity and reached back for his fastest bullet of the game, at 89, in the seventh inning. Finishing the outing with 70% strikes, he filled up the zone and went right at hitters. He also induced swing-and-miss on a curveball, featuring late...

Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Harley’s build offers a good balance of strength and athleticism, making him a well-rounded prospect with intriguing upside moving forward.  .#VandyBoys commit Aiden O’Connell (‘24, NH) is back on the bump in the #NEQ...

Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he’s got a lanky frame with long limbs and plenty of room for physical projection. It’s a quick arm with solid arm speed throughout and he opened up sitting 85-87 mph with the fastball. The fastball showed good sinking life and he used it to get a lot...
