LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2004 National Underclass Dec 28-30
Avila is a junior first baseman from Florida with a strong, thick proportionate build. Avila moves very well for his size, showing good range at first base and running the 60 in 7.33. He also showed 81 mph arm strength across the infield and we’re a bit curious why he doesn’t play some third base as well as first base because his tools grade out well for that position. Avila hits from an open stance with a good load and a short, quick swing to the ball with his hands close to his body. He has a line drive type of approach right now but could develop some nice power in the future with some adjustments and more extension. Avila also pitched 3 innings at the showcase and showed some arm strength. He was steady at 81-82 mph on his fastball with some tailing action down in the strike zone. Avila has a full wind up with a good arm action and a slightly cross body release. His curveball has some sweeping action to it at 66-68 mph and he threw a 72 mph change up.
