Randy Yard is a 2007 RHP with a 6'0'', 165 lb. frame from Palm Desert CA, who attends Palm Desert HS. Selected as a Top 10 Prospect at this event. Yard is a pitcher that is really coming on. In the last few months he has quickly been gaining velocity, while maintaining excellent feel and pitchability, especially with his secondary pitches. He is a lean, wiry bodied right-hander with a quick arm. Yard works from a high 3/4 slot and has a very clean, long arm action, with very good frontside extension. His arm is loose, as is his wrist, which helps him create such life on his pitches. He works easily and if he can continue to add strength on his frame, he is not finished gaining velocity. In this event he topped at 89 and sat in the 86-88 mph range. There is late life on his fastball and he located it well on both sides of the plate. Yard's curveball has tight spin and he throws it with good velocity (76 mph). If he can get that pitch into the low 80s, watch out. There was late action on his curveball, and on his change-up too, both thrown with excellent arm/hand speed. His feel of both those pitches is advanced and elicit lots of swing and misses from hitters. Yard is fun to watch pitch. He can carve up hitters with a quality three-pitch mix and is still developing all is stuff. Should be a great spring sign for some program and a follow for the local scouts.
