2005 Atlantic Coast Top Prospect Showcase
Soares is a 6-1, 185 lb infielder from Massachusets who profiles at third base. He ran the 60 in 7.38 and threw 74 mph during infield drills. Although Soares has the frame and build of a player who could easily be 6-1, 200 lbs in a few years when he gets stronger, he does have smooth and easy actions at shortstop at the present and should be made to play his way off that position. His game arm strength was much better than he showed in drills and he made all the plays during the games. If Soares does end up at third base, he'll be above average defensively at the next level. Offensively, Soares took one of the best BP's of anyone at the showcase. He has very quick and strong hands that generate plus raw bat speed when he stays short and compact. He showed that he could lift the ball and hit it out of the ball park as well. Soares showed hints that he tended to get out front and lunge at the ball during BP and really got over anxious during games and got out front quickly. When Soares learns to trust his quick hands and wait for the ball, he's going to really blossom as a hitter because he has all the tools. He's a very promising young hitter with some adjustments.
