2005 Midwest Top Prospect Showcase
Kyle Gilligan is a 6-2, 175 lb senior shortstop from Toronto. Before breaking down his tools, which are impressive, we will say that Gilligan did something that may have never been done at a showcase before. Certainly not at a Perfect Game Showcase. He was the leadoff hitter in the top of the first inning of the first showcase game. Gilligan hit the very first pitch of the showcase for a home run deep to left field. Talk about an attention getter! Back to the tools, Gilligan has solid Division I to pro level tools across the board and is one of the best Canadian prospects in the 2006 class. He is a 6.85 runner with good first step quickness and pure shortstop actions. Gilligan charges the ball exceptionally well and can really throw with velocity on the run. He has a very flexible and strong arm. We are told that he throws 90 off the mound and that's easy to believe. No coach will be tempted to take him off shortstop and the pro scouts will like him there as well. Offensively, Gilligan hits out of a tall stance with low hands and very good bat speed. He obviously has power and made some of his best contact to right centerfield. He's a 5-tool type of talent who should keep improving. Excellent follow.
