Jake Varner is a 2018 RHP/ with a 6-2 195 lb. frame from Palo Alto, CA who attends Palo Alto. Large frame with long limbs and a lean build. Frame projects to support additional size and strength. Primary right handed pitcher who worked exclusively from the stretch. Smooth paced, medium leg lift to gather with slight coil over back leg. Works to the plate with drop and drive actions and carries momentum through finish well. Long arm circle back at separation and released from a low three-quarters arm slot. Fastball came out of hand clean flashing occasional downhill angle through the zone with run to arm side in the upper 70's, topped at 80 miles per hour. Curveball had 11/5 shape with solid spin and good depth when maintaining arm speed and working down in the zone. Also flashed a changeup offering that had some sink in the mid 70's. Released all pitched from a similar arm slot and consistently attacked the lower quadrant of the zone inducing weak, ground ball contact throughout each inning of work. Excellent student as well.
