Sam Young is a 2019 RHP/1B/3B with a 6-3 200 lb. frame from Urbandale, IA who attends Dowling Catholic HS. Tall frame with long limbs and present strength. Primary right handed pitcher with a simple rock step to medium leg lift delivery. Stays balanced on back side at gather and worked to the plate with drop and drive actions. Lands in line with front side and carries momentum to target. Clean arm circle at take back and released from a high three-quarters arm slot. Fastball came out of hand cleanly producing downhill tilt with slight cut to glove side in the low 80's, topped at 82 miles per hour. Curveball had 12/6 shape with looser spin and some depth when staying on top of offering. Also flashed a changeup in the low 70's that produced some sink to the bottom of the zone. Consistently changed speeds and looked to challenge hitters to the bottom quadrants of the zone. Also worked out defensively from the infield showing deliberate footwork while rounding the baseball. Funnels baseball from a slightly deeper position and worked through exchange with loose actions. Released from a three-quarters arm slot generating some on line carry to the bag at 76 miles per hour. Right handed hitter with an upright, open stance and reaching front side trigger. Created some linear shift into contact with lower half. Direct hand path to baseball with a line drive barrel plane through extension. Barrel enters and exits the zone quickly. Primarily looked to drive the baseball to the gaps showing developing feel for the barrel. Good student as well.
