Niko Vasquez is a 2008 SS/3B/2B with a 6'0'', 175 lb. frame from Las Vegas, NV who attends Durango HS. He has a lean, lively build with some developing strength. Vasquez ran the 60 in 7.08 but there is no question he has the actions and quickness to be a high level shortstop. He has quick feet and soft hands and knows how to play the position. Most importantly, Vasquez has outstanding natural arm strength and can make throws most shortstops can't. He does tend to put too much of a premium on flair and not enough on getting easy outs but this will evolve with maturity. Offensively, Vazquez hits from a spread stance with an easy, low effort swing and very good bat speed. He has very quick hands to the ball and showed an advanced ability in games to stay back on off speed pitches and hit them hard to the middle of the field. Vasquez isn't especially strong yet and he's going to have power when he gets older. His approach is similar to Alberto Pujols in his balance and swing plane. Vasquez has a load of potential as an offensive middle infielder. He didn't pitch in Cincinnati but we've heard reports of his throwing in the low to mid 90's off the mound and they are credible given his infield arm strength.
