2004 World Showcase
Ortiz was one of the stars of the World Showcase and will shoot up in the national rankings and in the estimation of the professional scouts. Given that he’s a 4.0 student back in Puerto Rico who speaks very good English, the colleges could well get involved as well. Ortiz ran the fastest 60 ever recorded at a Perfect Game event the first time over the course at 6.29, then proved that was no fluke by notching the second best time, 6.34, on the second run. At 5-11, 150, Ortiz is slender and wiry but showed that he could handle the bat well, knocking 4 hits in 5 at bats in games and showing a mature appreciation of what he was capable of doing at the plate. He ran 3.93 to first from the left side and was a terror once he reached base. Ortiz’s arm strength is very close to Major League average right now and he ranges over several zip codes in centerfield. He’s probably never going to hit for any power but Ortiz does several things very well right now and several things right off the charts. The draft should be interesting.
