LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2006 National Showcase
Cody Allen is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Boone HS, residing in Orlando, FL. Allen has a broad, athletic build on his strong a 6'1" 195 lb. frame. His stuff doesn't just jump out as much as some others, partly because he lacks the raw power velocity with the fastball and he is a 6'1" righty, but his secondary stuff is very good, enough to be ranked #44 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. Allen pitches from a high 3/4 slot and has a loose arm (and loose wrist), with a short two piece action on the backside of his delivery. He has decent body control and is able to repeat his patient delivery, which is part of the reason his secondary stuff is so good. Allen's fastball sat in the 88-91 mph range (top 92) and he showed that he can ride it up and in on RH hitters. When his hand got more extension, there was some good sink on the fastball too. Allen was effectively wild with the fastball, yet another reason his secondary stuff is effective. His slider was 80-81 mph and his curveball 74-75, both with good spin and command. The curveball had hard rolling action and the slider has a chance to bite hard in the zone. Allen also showed feel of a usable change-up. As he continues to build lower body strength he should continue to gain some velocity on all his pitches, which clearly bodes well for his breaking stuff, which he already throws pretty hard. Though Allen is a primary pitcher, he did show some life in his swing during BP. He stayed in the middle of the field and his hands worked well, making solid barrel contact. Allen looks like a very good D1 prospect, the type of freshman arm that can contribute early on, possibly on the weekend. There may be some pro attention, but he likely would have to make a pretty big jump this spring.
