2006 Midwest Top Prospect Showcase
Colton Murray is a 2008 RHP/3B with a 6'0'', 165 lb. frame from Overland Park KS, who attends Olathe East HS. He has a medium athletic frame and appears about 10-15 lbs stronger/bigger than his listed 165 weight. Murray listed himself as a primary pitcher but we feel he is a superior position prospect based on this look. He is a 6.90 runner with good first step quickness and athletic bounce to his actions. Murray was the defensive star of the showcase at third base, making different types of plays that showed his range, arm strength and ability to charge the ball. He showed a plus big league arm on a couple of throws far in excess of the 82 mph he threw during infield drills. It was really a spectacular performance. Offensively, Murray hits with low hands and gets out to his front side quickly. He has very good bat speed and slashes the ball to the gaps with good power. He needs some work in keeping his weight back and in getting his hands through better on inside pitches, but the tools are there to hit at a high level. On the mound, Murray showed his arm strength, throwing up to 87 mph from a max effort, cross body pitching style and low 3/4's release point. His curveball was a big sweeping slurve at 75 mph. His command was inconsistent. Murray's raw stuff and pitching style will make him successful on the mound up to a point, but we feel he can excede this as a position player. He is a very good follow.
