2005 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Derek Jeter is a 2007 LHP/1B from Gulf Breeze High School in Navarre, Florida, with a 6'2'', 170 lb. frame. He is a strong, lean, and athletic pitcher with more projection. On the mound he throws from a 3/4 arm slot with a slow and deliberate delivery. His mechanics are smooth, and he shows good arm speed with a loose arm. He stays through the ball well and works downhill. His fastball topped out at 78 mph with good cutting action in the hands of right handed hitters. His late life causes hitters to make inconsistent contact. Jeter also mixes in a good changeup at 71 mph with arm side fade, and a late breaking curveball at 68 mph. He shows good control of all three pitches, and has pitchability with projectable velocity. Good upside on the mound. Defensively he has soft hands and smooth footwork around the first base bag. At the plate he has a balanced swing with good bat speed and shows some pop. Jeter plays the game hard, and is fun to watch. He is also a very good student.
