2006 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
Joel Thorney is a college aged RHP with a 6'5'', 215 lb. frame from Stouffville ON. He was drafted out of high school by the Mets in 2003 and is attempting to come back after some arm injuries. Thorney has a profile pitcher's body with good present strength and maturity. He throws from a low 3/4's release point with a quick, slinging arm action that creates deception for the hitters. Thorney's fastball was up to 85 mph, mostly 81-83. He gets plus life on his fastball tailing into right handed hitters and can break bats with his movement. His 75 mph change up had the same type of life and movement on it as his fastball. He mixed in a couple of curveballs but was primarily a fastball pitcher who depended on his movment and location to get outs.
