2004 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
IF Erik Christensen: Christensen is a big raw boned senior from Iowa who was probably the strongest player at the Showcase. It looks like it’s all natural strength, too. The wood bat is pretty light in his hands. Christensen has a slow trigger at the plate and his swing can get long but the ball really jumps when he makes solid contact. He laced a few with power in batting practice that had good carry but that didn’t prepare us for the rocket he hit in one of the Showcase games. Christensen got his hands extended on a fastball and hit a rocket that hit the 403' sign just to the right of the batting eye at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. This wasn’t a fly ball, this was a line drive that ricocheted hard off the wall. If Christensen had got under it a fraction, there’s no telling how far it would have gone. Christensen’s speed and arm strength limit him to first base or designated hitter and he’s by no means a polished or consistent hitter. But you really don’t see that kind of raw power very often in a young player.
