Sferra makes up for his lack of physical stature with good tools and excellent baseball skills. His skill development isn’t surprising, given that his dad is an assistant coach at Arizona State. Sferra’s best tool is his speed. He ran a 6.74 60 in Lincoln and was consistently in the 4.2-4.3 range on ground balls. Sferra appears quicker than that on the bases as he has a very quick first step and is a highly aggressive baserunner who looked for the steal every time he was on base. His speed and approach on the bases blends perfectly with his approach at the plate. Sferra has a solid line drive swing, keeps the ball on the ground and will take pitches to the opposite field. He has all the elements to be a great college leadoff hitter. Sferra’s speed is more than sufficient to enable him to play centerfield. His arm strength is a bit below average right now but he showed good accuracy on his throws. To think Sferra has much room to add strength makes him project better than nearly all the top high school prospects of '04'. J.J. is a good student.
