2003 South Underclass Showcase
Jay Bruce is a good looking prospect for the 2005 class. He is a 6 foot 2 left-handed hitting first baseman with a solid 200 pound frame and a hard hitting bat. He played 1B and pitches, but he did not pitch in Waco. He did not throw across the infield because he is finishing rehab on an arm injury. He did not have to show his arm strength to prove he is an athlete and can hit. He began the showcase by running a 7.02 in the 60 with good coordination and athleticism. He had a good batting practice showing good bat-speed even though he slowed the bat down at times to show all field hitting ability. He knows how to hit and has a nice fluid swing with power as the ball jumped off his bat. In the games he showed more good swings and hits off live pitching. We like his ability with the bat and if he ends up in the outfield we would not be surprised. He presently has a few excellent tools and the potential is there for him to be a good draft pick in 2 years.
