2004 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
RHP/OF Justin Funk: Funk is a senior outfielder/pitcher from Iowa who recently signed with Franciscan University. This young man has the potential to be a very good baseball player at the college level because his tools definitely play, but he’s always just flashed us the tools during the Spring League and at the Showcase. Funk has a nice medium build that can add some strength in the future. He ran 7.02 for us in the 60, but a few adjustments in his running style could make him a solid big league average runner. Funk’s arm from the outfield is very good, he rang up 88 mph on the radar gun at the work out and his throws have good carry and accuracy. While his arm is loose and free on the mound, Funk doesn’t generate the same kind of arm speed from a kind of drop and drive delivery, topping out at 82 mph. A taller, more leveraged delivery might give him better velocity as a pitcher. At the plate, Funk will flash some bat speed and can drive the ball hard to left field when he gets his hands extended to the ball. He’ll need to make more consistent contact to take advantage of his hitting potential, though. It will be interesting to follow his college career because this might be a player who you look at in a few years and say "Wow, he’s pretty good!"
