2004 Southeast Underclass Showcase
Mason McVerry is a strong and athletic young 2006 catcher from Charlotte, North Carolina, who was the top overall catching prospect at the showcase. McVerry has a classic running back type of build, and has excellent speed for a catcher. He ran 7.24 in the 60, but had a different gear on the bases and looked like a plus runner on a triple to right centerfield. McVerry has a controlled approach at the plate, with a short swing, very good hand strength, and an advanced ability to stay inside the ball but still make it jump off the bat. McVerry also chokes up a bit on the wood, something we rarely see in young hitters, but something that many young players would benefit from. This young prospect is going to hit, we think. Defensively, McVerry’s receiving skills are a bit raw, but his athletic ability and quickness serve him well. He has good arm strength at 74 mph in workouts but had numerous pop times in the 1.90-1.98 range because of his quick release. Although he does profile as a catcher, his athletic ability and speed would enable McVerry to play just about any position on the field. He is also a very good student off the field. Very Good Follow!
