LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2003 Northeast Top Prospect Showcase
Karl is an "04" LHP/1B As one of the Top Prospects in Wareham, there is a lot to talk about with Matt Karl. At 6 foot 2 and 205 pounds, he is a good looking presence on the field. His shoulders are slightly sloped and still have enough width to carry another 20 pounds of useable muscle over the next few years. He has a strong lower half that is proportionate to his upper body and balances out a good solid frame. He displayed athleticism in Wareham for his size and for his position. As a First baseman, Karl showed easy footwork with a natural way of maneuvering around the bag. He made all the plays going to the backhand and scooping without missing a beat. He stayed low on ground balls, showed soft hands and came up firing at 86 mph across the field to the 3B bag without putting forth much effort. If he had a defensive weakness it would be the movement his ball showed on the throw. On the mound it would be considered a Plus! At the plate he hit the ball as hard as we saw anyone hit in Wareham. He can really punish with wood and he did. It's clear to us that he can hit at the next level with the pitch recognition, Major League bat-speed, level swing and power that he displayed in both BP and the games. He showed 7.5 speed in the 60 and got down the line quickly for a power hitter at 4.6 after taking a big hack. The way he hit live pitching and the velocity at which the ball jumped off his bat is a good indication that he should be highly sought after by Colleges and Pro scouts. And he bats Left-handed. He also has good pitching ability. He is a Left-hander on the hill and we have seen upper 80's velocity from him earlier in the year, but due to rain he did not have the opportunity to close the final game as planned. He has the body, arm strength and live ball factor that provide a good platform for him to excel as a pitcher. He may even end up being better on the mound in both College and the Draft. If he is unsigned and Colleges are in the market for a top LHP and / or First Baseman, look no further.
