2003 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Payne’s best weapon as a pitcher is a 70 mph downer curveball that he got on top of so well that it occasionally backed up into a right handed hitter. You don’t see that too often at any level. The 6-2, 175 lb. Payne throws a 4-seam fastball 86-87 mph and a 2-seam sinker with good action at 83 mph and should add velocity to both pitches as he fills out his projectable, athletic body. An added plus for Payne that will help him improve his pitching is that he’s a good athlete who can play the middle of the infield and swing the bat well. He even runs close to MLB average. Very interesting top level college prospect with a possible pro future. Matt is also a top student. Scouts should keep a close eye on him, he could really step up before next June.
