2004 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Anthony Shawler is a 6'2", 180 lb. catcher/pitcher from Chesapeake, Virginia, with 6.93 sixty speed, a power arm, and pro level bat. He might be one of the top 10 catchers in the country. Anthony was one of the top prospects at the event at two positions. Pro scouts are split between Anthony being a catcher or right handed pitcher. He showed 1.90-1.98 pop times with very good pro level (84 mph) velocity. He can throw 1.95's from his knees and will shut down a running game. He is a fast twitch athlete with good footwork and very low throws to second base. His throws carry through the bag and would hit the OF grass if not caught. On the mound Anthony showed an 88 mph fastball, and a 79 mph power slurve. His slurve has occasional knee bending type explosive break at the plate that freezes most batters. Anthony has a simple delivery with pro level arm speed and online stride. We have seen his fastball at 92 mph earlier this year. He's a right handed hitter with a very quick bat and a balanced swing with the ability to hit with power to all fields. He hits from a tall stance with a knee lift trigger. Shawler has plus strength with fast twitch muscles that can hit upper velocity pitching. Anthony is still projectable and has the potential to be a good draft pick.
