Matthew Jaimes is a 2006 third baseman/right handed pitcher from Ontario, CA with a medium build at 6-0, 185 lbs and good present strength. He ran the 60 in 6.92. Jaimes is a very good defensive third baseman, with quick feet and very good range. He plays an aggressive third base and likes to dive for the ball. Jaimes arm strength is a plus for him, too. He's also played some outfield and is a solid defender with very good arm strength as well. Offensively, Jaimes has a rock back approach with a long, extended swing with plenty of loft in it. He generates plenty of bat speed and the ball jumps off his bat on contact. He'll likely have to work on shortening up his swing as he consistently faces more high velocity pitching but the basics are there for him to be a very good hitter. Jaimes also took a turn on the mound and showed his arm strength again. He throws from a mid to low 3/4's release point and his fastball was up to 89 mph. He showed a good feel for a sweeping curveball at 74 mph and also threw a straight change and a split finger. Jaimes definitely has the ability to pitch and pitch well at the next level as well as play a position. He's a high level 2-way prospect who plays hard. Jaimes is a good student who has signed with Hawaii.
