Couwenhoven is a long and lean 6-5, 205 lb first baseman with some serious power potential. He has good hand quickness with the bat and great leverage on contact. Couwenhoven would greatly benefit from a different approach, though. He hits from a very, very wide stance with moderate crouch and no load or hip turn, the net result being that he loses much of his natural power potential. He is a good athlete for his size. He ran 7.21 in the 60 and made some nice defensive plays at first base. Mike compares very closely to Wisconsin's Tyler Beranek, other than he isn't as well known and needs a bit more development. Mike could be a giant sleeper and he’s very strong academically as well.
