2002 PG Evaluation/Instructional Camp Indianapolis
Kurzydlo is a freshman pitcher from Illinois who also plays outfield. He showed best on the mound, but at his age we never rule out the possibility of a secondary position. At the plate he changed around his approach a little, starting out with a very big stride and making positive adjustments as Skeeter Barnes had hitting stations set up to work on such things. He ended up with a, straight to the ball, swing that had good results. His stride shortened up a bit and he was able to get some very nice looking swings in. He ran a 7.4 in the 60 which is good for his age and he projects to get much faster as he becomes stronger and his body matures. Right now, his arm is his best tool. From the outfield he threw with 77 mph velocity and on the mound his fastball also showed 77 mph velocity. We think there is more in him on the mound and for his age he has the potential to become a good prospect. Most of his mechanics looked good by the time his bullpen and instruction were finished. He ended up slowing down his delivery and showed excellent balance right from the start. In fact, it is good to see a young pitcher understand the importance of balance. We think he has a good basic delivery to build on. He pitches from an, over the top, arm slot and showed another variation to his fastball with cutting action. The Cutter registered at 75 mph and has good action on it. His curveball was a big 12-6 type with lots of drop to it and 64-67 mph velocity. That was his best overall pitch. He also threw a change-up at 65 mph that he will be able to use ahead in the count. The overall potential for a pitcher this young and talented is very high. Kurzydlo has a lot of ability for his age. He will be interesting to follow.
