2004 South Top Prospect Showcase
Ben Booker is a 6'3/180 2005 INF/OF from Bruceville, TX. Booker is an angular 6'3", 180 lb. middle infielder who is an AFLAC All-American and who participated in the Perfect Game National Showcase earlier in the summer. He has some serious big league tools. Booker tells us that he’s been working on his running this summer and it shows. He ran a 6.44-60 on an average grass field, an improvement over his time on the Tropicana Field turf. Booker’s speed plays in games both on defense and on offense. Defensively, Booker showed very good range and soft, sure hands in Waco. He flows through the ball very well and made all the plays. His arm strength is still a bit below average for shortstop and there has been plenty of talk about him playing second base or even the outfield in the future. Offensively, Booker is still just scratching the surface of his potential. He has the hand strength and bat speed to hit with above average power, but consistently hits around the ball in games and tends to be overanxious and not trust his ability. Every once in a while Booker will stay back and center a ball and it will rocket off his bat, though. Booker is a serious, hard working ball player and is going to put in the time to keep improving, we’re sure. He's one of the best in his class.
