2005 South Top Prospect Showcase
Ashley is a 6-2, 175 lb senior catcher from Texas who also pitches and plays the outfield. Ashley is a very good runner for a catcher at 7.04/4.45 and has athletic actions. He showed very good arm strength at all three positions he played, throwing 85 mph as a pitcher, 84 mph from the outfield and 76 mph from behind the plate. Ashley's arm stroke is long and high, even from behind the plate, and this accounts for his relatively slow 2.17 best pop time considering his arm strength. Offensively, Ashley has a busy load with a pull oriented line drive swing and good extension out front. He'll benefit from more strength to add bat speed in the future but he showed the ability to handle the bat head well and had 3 hits during the showcase games. Ashley was interesting as a pitcher. He has a busy delivery, much like his set up at the plate, that may effect his command. He threw 85 mph pretty easily for a secondary pitcher and showed some promise on a 74 mph split change. He didn't throw a breaking ball and has a slider type arm action should he develop one. Overall, Ashley has plenty of very good baseball tools and he projects to get better in the future. On one short look it would be tempting to say his ceiling is higher both as an outfielder and as a pitcher than as a catcher, but that's based on just one look. Either way, he's a very good follow. Ashley is also an exceptional student.
