2006 National Showcase
Sam Roberts is a 2007 left hand hitting 3rd baseman/right hand pitcher from Prince George HS, residing in Prince George, VA. He has a thin and wiry body type, though pretty athletic, with a 6'2" 170 lb. frame. Roberts is a talented young player with a good future. He was ranked #89 among PG National Top 100 position players and is still a long way from being physically developed. Other players' abilities his age show up a bit more right now because they are further along the in body maturation. When Roberts catches them in a few years, his baseball skills will have passed many of them by, including many that are ranked ahead of him now. He hits from an open stance and pretty much stays open during his swing. His hands are good hitting hands and at this point his swing is a bit inside out, which can be a good indication of how his bat will develop in the future. As he gets stronger, the bat head is going to start flying faster, lagging behind until it whips to being squared up at contact. There are times that his swing is pretty lively and he is a good contact line-drive type hitter with some feel for hitting. He has a good oppo stroke and lets the ball travel and when he swings, it is an aggressive swing. In the field Roberts shows off a loose arm with above average raw arm strength. He has some feel for the game and for the defensive half. Roberts good hitting hands also translate to his fielding. There really isn't anything he lacks at this point, in a baseball skills sense. It is all about physical development. Roberts did not pitch at PG National but has been seen pretty good on the hill, where his quick arm works. As a runner he was 4.39 home/1st and posted a 7.13 60 yard time. He likely will improve his running as well in the near future. He is a D1 player and should develop nicely as a pro prospect in college.
