Rainbird is a angular 6-1, 170 lb left handed hitting third baseman/right handed pitcher from Texas. He has a very young looking body and projects very, very well. Rainbird worked out at third base and showed very good arm strength at 86 mph. He has smooth infield actions with quick hands and balanced actions through the ball. We saw no reason physically that Rainbird shouldn't be able to play shortstop at a high level defensively and were curious why that wasn't his primary position. Offensively, Rainbird hits out of a very wide, crouched stance with limited hip and lower body rotation. He shows good hand quickness in his swing with a line drive swing plane. Rainbird made consistent hard contact to the middle of the field. We'd really like to see him adjust his approach to unleash his power potential at the plate and getting stronger is going to help him as well. Rainbird also impressed us with his pitching ability. He has a very quick arm that produced a 84 mph fastball, 70 mph curveball and 76 mph change up. Rainbird's mechanics were a bit raw, like you'd expect out of a secondary pitcher, but he has the chance to throw much harder with some adjustments and strength gains. Overall, Rainbird is a very good player right now with the potential to really blossom further in a number of areas. He could be a gem by the time he's 21. Strong follow! Rainbird is also a good student.
