Shawn Newman is a 2005 LHP from Jacksonville, FL. Newman is a 6'2" left handed pitcher with a good strong athletic body. He pitched three effective innings in Fort Myers with very unusual pitching mechanics. Newman has a big leg kick but little gather and a long, flat arm stroke. He opens his front shoulder very early, generating lots of deception, but negating some of the power and leverage he can get from his body. His fastball was 78-79 mph and he maintained his velocity well. Newman threw 82 mph from the outfield and looks like he has much more natural arm strength. He threw a few breaking balls early but started throwing a 70-71 mph slider in the third inning that had some good depth and bite to it. Newman also threw a pretty good change up. He struck out four hitters in three scoreless innings. He could end up being a very good college lefty. He also swings the bat well. Projects very well.
