2004 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
RHP/IF Zach Zirbel: Zirbel is an athletic looking 6-1 right handed pitcher who has signed to go to Northern Iowa next fall. We think he’s going to be a very effective college pitcher. Zirbel was 83-85 mph on his fastball during the Spring League games and did a good job of maintaining his velocity as he got deep into his pitch count. He juiced it up to 87 mph consistently during the Spring Showcase but had trouble getting the pitch down in the strike zone. Zirbel’s best pitch for both quality and command is his 73-76 mph curveball/slurve. This pitch is hard and sharp and even when Zirbel is struggling to locate his fastball, he can drop the hammer into the strike zone at any count. With his strength, overall athleticism and arm speed, it’s easy to see Zirbel as a high 80’s pitcher in a couple years as he matures. If he maintains his present curveball, that combination is going to get lots of college hitters out.
