LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2007 National Showcase
Andy Burns is a 2008 SS with a 6'1'', 180 lb. frame from Ft. Collins, CO who attends Rocky Mountain HS. He has a lean athletic body with a bit of a high waist and lots of projection. Burns was one of the big revelations of the National Showcase and was named an Aflac All American after the event. His hitting ability stands out, especially so because he's a middle infielder. Burns has an outstanding swing that combines an easy, relaxed set up with top level bat speed. The ball explodes off the his bat as he extends smoothly through the ball and he's going to develop big power in the future. Burns crushed the ball to all fields with a line drive swing plane and just looked totally in control of some of the best pitchers in the country. PG scouts made the comparison to a young Ryne Sandburg type hitter. Defensively, Burns is not an actions type of defender at shortstop but has the athletic ability, hands and arm strength to get the job done. He has very good body control and makes the plays. He'll have to work on speeding up his release on some types of plays. Burns is a 6.70 runner who showed nice baserunning instincts. Overall, Burns gives the impression of being a pure baseball type, which should just enhance his projection. He is also an excellent student. Selected to 2007 Aflac All-American team.
