Del Howell is a 2006 left handed pitcher from Northport, AL with a tall slender build at 6-4, 180 lbs. Howell has solid pitching mechanics and a smooth, easy arm action. He throws downhill from a high 3/4's release point and pitches at 88-90 mph with little effort. Howell's fastball gets some running action which is helped by his downward plane. Right now Howell looked like a primary fastball pitcher. His 75 mph curveball had good velocity but loose spin and he didn't show much feel for that pitch or a change up. There's nothing in his arm action or mechanics that indicates that he can't pick up some secondary pitches with more experience and instruction. Howell's slender build and loose arm make it appear like he has plenty more velocity in his arm that he hasn't tapped yet and he could be a southpaw who ends up touching the mid 90's before he's done. Highest level prospect. Howell is also a very good student off the field.
