2004 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
SS Brandon Douglas: Brandon Douglas is one of the top infield prospects in the Upper Midwest and had an outstanding Spring Showcase. He’s signed to attend Northern Iowa and we think that if he stays healthy and focused over the next couple of years, Douglas has a chance to be a very good draft choice when his turn comes around. All five of Douglas’s tools play well and he’s a great makeup player whose father is a veteran coach. As a shortstop, Douglas has shown us 90 mph arm strength across the infield, although he does throw with some effort. His feet and hands work well enough to stay at shortstop at the upper levels of baseball. Douglas is a 6.91 runner. At the plate, he has a quick line drive swing and makes very consistent line drive contact to all fields. He will occasionally collapse his back side and get a bit longer and loftier swing. If Douglas wasn’t a position prospect, he’d be a Division I pitching prospect as well. We’ve seen him touch 86-87 mph before on his fastball and he was 83-84 mph at the Showcase. Douglas’s curveball is sharp and tight at 70 and overmatches young hitters. This kid can play and he has the tools and skills to play baseball at the highest levels in the future.
