2005 South Underclass Showcase
Merritt is a 5-9, 140 lb junior second baseman from Texas who also played some outfield. He ran the 60 in 7.59. Merritt showed good outfield arm strength at 80 mph and threw 73 mph during infield drills. He has a quick release on his throws in the infield. Merritt's hands worked well in the infield but it looked like he was using the same glove for both infield and outfield and that he'd benefit from using a smaller glove at second base. Offensively, Merritt hits out of a wide stance and gets out to his front side early. He's a contact hitter with very good hand/eye coordination and the ability to square up on the ball to all fields. Merritt doesn't have the present strength to drive the ball with wood right now but he had a very high percentage of good contacts that will be finding holes and gaps when he's stronger and using metal. He is a good student.
