2004 World Showcase
We’d seen Allen at the Southwest Showcase in Waco in July and been very impressed but hadn’t seen him since because of football. Despite the time on gridiron, Allen’s really taken some positive steps forward and was one of the real highlights of the World Showcase. Allen is a physically imposing 6-2, 235 lbs but is very well proportioned and shows no signs of any weight lifting tightness at all. As if to prove it, Allen threw 89 mph from the outfield, one of the top times of the event and solid Major League level for right field. Allen ran 7.07 in the 60, down a couple tenths from the summer and that might well have been impacted by the time of year. But Allen’s most impressive tool is his left handed bat. He’s a very polished hitter, with the ability to recognize outside pitches and take them solidly to left centerfield or turn on inside stuff. Allen’s bat speed is very good and the only thing he lacks right now with the bat that we can see is the ability to lift the ball with any consistency. That will come with time and more repetitions. Allen is a good student and we understand from the people in Texas that he is an outstanding young man who is 100% baseball in the future.
