2005 South Top Prospect Showcase
Blackmon is a 6-0, 175 lb senior shortstop from Texas with a nice baseball body that looks taller than his listed 6-0. Blackmon has smooth and polished actions in the middle infield. His hands work well and he uses his quickness to get to plenty of balls. Blackmon does tend to play deeper and more in the hole than most shortstops we've seen and that has to be a learned style of play based on his abilities. Blackmon is a 7.16 runner and showed 76 mph arm strength in infield with with a quick release. Offensively, Blackmon shows some bat speed and strength at the plate. He has a good load and coil and some hand quickness. He tends to cut off his swing out front and not finish his swing, which costs him power but can be improved on. Blackmon also pitched a bit and showed the same type of polish on the mound that he showed on defense. He didn't have top end velocity, pitching at 76-78 mph with a 63 mph curveball, but had very good command of his pitches and threw with little effort. Blackmon is a good overall player who projects nicely. He is a very good student.
