2005 South Top Prospect Showcase
James is a 6-2, 220 lb third baseman from Texas who also catches. He ran 7.46 in the 60 and threw 75 mph during infield drills and 74 mph during catching drills with a best pop time of 2.12. James caught well in the games and showed his arm strength throwing out a couple of runners. He looked more natural and confident behind the plate defensively to us than he did at third base and his tools profile better at that position. At the plate, Smith has a busy set up with a reverse toe tap trigger and lots of hand action. He has obvious strength in his hands and upper body and generates good bat speed through the ball. Right now James has a line drive swing plane and makes consistent hard line drive contact. With some lift and more extension in his swing he could hit the ball a long way with his strength. He's a good looking young hitter whose prospect status increases if he were to be a full-time catcher. James is also a good student.
